Training Equipment for Disabled Girl

Start Date: 14 March 2009
Closing Date: 01 June 2009
A treadmill will help Marianna exercise her limbs and help prevent the need for further surgery, which she has already undergone several times.
Marianna Mkrtchian is a 12 year old girl who suffers from cerebral palsy. We took her on a hippo therapy course in January 2009 which involved riding horses. We'll describe this unique method of treatment in another project shortly.
We found Marianna had difficulty in walking and moving and that she has already been operated on several times, involving her knees, her groin, as well as even her eyes. So she has not had the best of times.
The operation on sinews behind her knees was needed in order to help her legs grow, as Marianna’s body is still at an early stage of development.
Individuals with spastic diplegia have very stiff muscles, and they must make extra efforts to overcome the stiffness which they perpetually experience.
Marianna attends physiotherapy and is encouraged to stretch her muscles through the help of a treadmill, and regular exercise with this equipment will greatly improve her condition.
Marianna’s family searched for ways to buy the training equipment for use at home, but could not afford this luxury.
They pay for their daughter's transportation to school every day as there are no public transport facilities for disabled children in Armenia, and there is no money left in the pot for "extras".
The purchase of a bicycle (training equipment) will enable Marianna to exercise at home without having to always attend a therapy unit.
Regular exercise on the bicycle will strengthen her leg muscles and enhance the functions of the foot. The training equipment will also help keep her knee joints flexible to assist her in walking.
We are sure the equipment will enourage Marianna to become an independent young lady as she moves into her teens.
