APPEAL No. 5
Internet Connection For Children's Home
ABOUT / MEDIA / DONATE / DONORS / RESULTS
Start Date: 01 April 2008
Closing Date: 01 October 2009
The internet provides access to a wealth of information and communication with the worldwide online community. The provision of internet connectivity, especially to the disadvantaged, is therefore a low-cost way of addressing many basic needs.
Watch a video about the life of children at the Nansen orphanage.
One of the first projects of Aid Armenia was to provide the Children's Home in Gyumri with two computers and a printer/scanner, which allows the residents of the home to acquire computer skills. We then provided an internet connection to enable the children and staff to establish much better contact with the outside world and to make use of the information and other resources available on the internet.
The process of finding a reliable and relatively fast internet connection in Gyumri was not so easy, as the city has no DSL lines. They were damaged during the earthquake of 1988 and have not been restored (Gyumri was severely affected by the earthquake). Nevertheless, after careful research we found a provider for the Children's Home called Delta Telecom. The average speed of the internet connection is 120kbs, which although not comparable to the higher speeds available in the west, is still acceptable for using the internet. We are pleased to state that The Mariott Hotel in Yerevan enjoys the same speed!
We have so far received donations to maintain the internet connection until January 2009, after which further funding will be needed. Please see the financial link below for information on the relatively low monthly charges involved, and do email us if you would like to provide an internet connection for other projects.
