APPEAL No. 6
Computers for Blind Students and Graduates
ABOUT / MEDIA / DONATE / DONORS / RESULTS
Start Date: 18 August 2008
Closing Date: 20 October 2009
The "Arev" audio program allows blind people to 'read' books and browse the internet in Armenian, Russian or English. The aim of this appeal is to purchase several of the programmes (including computers) and install them in the homes of blind students.
The "Arev" program also enables blind musicians to compose music, and provides the ability for the blind to play chess on a computer.
There are 10,000 blind people in Armenia and only very few have access to a computer let alone to one loaded with "Arev" software. "Arev" means "Sun" in Armenian, and it can certainly help brighten up the life of blind students and young professionals.
Blind people in Armenia are keen to study in higher educational institutions in order to receive a proper education, which they hope will allow them to find meaningful employment in the future. However, they naturally encounter greater difficulties than sighted people. There is also shortage of braille books, which restricts access of blind students and blind people in general to information.
The "Arev" computer program can open the door to a new way of accessing information, and we spent time discussing the situation and hopes of blind people with students such as Marika Siradeghyan (pictured above).
Marika is 21 yrs old and a 3rd year student at The Monte Melkonian University - Faculty of Philology. She cannot see out of her right eye, while the left one has glaucoma and a cataract, which barely enables her to distinguish light from darkness. She must take medicine to ensure that the pressure in her eyes remain normal.
She receives $40 disability benefit per month from the Government, and is helped by her relatives to live as best she can. She records university lectures using a dictaphone, but unlike the Arev computer program, this cannot of course enable her to read books, type, or browse the internet.
Marika believes that the Arev program will help bring a ray of sunshine into her dark world and is looking forward to the day when she can sit down at a computer to 'read' and write, and to invite her blind friends and colleagues to her home to share in its possibilities.
