APPEAL No. 7
Cleaning up the Environment
ABOUT / MEDIA / DONATE / DONORS / RESULTS
Start Date: 01 September 2007
Closing Date: 30 October 2007
The Armenian countryside is beautiful - from snow capped mountains to lush valleys - and is rightly regarded as "The Garden of Eden." The hills around Khor Virup Monastery are however a little too green to be true...
Khor Virup is a world famous monastery situated just south of Yerevan in the biblical Ararat valley. It was here that St Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned on account of his Christian belief, until the pagan King freed him after accepting Christianity on behalf of the country.
The hills behind the monastery have unfortunately been covered in a sea of green plastic bottles that have been dumped there over time by visitors, and the view of Mount Ararat in the background is therefore spoiled, while the vicinity around the monastery has become an eysore.
We believe that a clean-up campaign is long overdue and will be easy to implement with the support of students.
We propose to visit the site and clear away all the rubbish to leave the hills as nature intended them to be.
We estimate that the costs of the endeavour will not exceed £200, including the hire of the coach. If all goes well and our donors want us to clean up other sites in Armenia, then perhaps we could make this the first of many such endeavours.
